About the circuit

The Algarve International Circuit near Portimão, Portugal, is widely regarded as one of the most spectacular modern racing venues in the world. Opened in 2008, the circuit quickly gained attention for its dramatic elevation changes, blind crests and fast, flowing corners that give the track its famous “rollercoaster” character.

The 4.592 km layout features 15 turns and a long main straight of almost one kilometre, where Formula 1 cars can reach very high speeds before heavy braking into Turn 1, one of the main overtaking opportunities on the circuit. The track’s combination of steep climbs, sudden drops and technical corners makes it extremely demanding for both drivers and engineers.

Portimão hosted Formula 1 during the pandemic-affected seasons, joining the calendar for the Portuguese Grand Prix in 2020 and 2021 when several temporary venues were added to replace cancelled races. Both events delivered exciting racing and quickly became popular among fans thanks to the circuit’s unique layout and scenic surroundings.

After several years away from the championship, the Portuguese Grand Prix is set to return to the Formula 1 calendar in 2027, bringing F1 back to one of Europe’s most visually striking circuits.
